Dr. Gary S. Goodman

One of the most disconcerting thoughts we can foster is that we're trapped, fenced in, immobile.

We can feel small, that the world outside is pressing on us. We might feel rejected interpersonally, or unsuccessful at work. Perhaps we're suffering from illness, or even buried under a mountain of bills.

The idea that we're helpless to act, that we can only react, and not even do that very well, can ruin our outlook if we let it.

One of the best ways to snap out of this sort of funk is to realize that you have choices.

One of them is to take on a larger viewpoint.

I think this happens to us when we get onto an airplane and rise above the clouds.

Looking across at what seems to be an infinite horizon, we realize how much space there is. Literally, this perception can enlarge our perspectives.

Seeing a movie with sweeping vistas in it can deliver a similar benefit.

If you're unemployed, instead of staying in your home, dress up and walk around a busy downtown. Look at people during the lunch hour and tell yourself that the great majority of them are employed, and you will be, too.

In fact, at any given time, even in recessions, 90-plus percent of people who are interested in working are actually employed, earning paychecks.

You can cheer yourself up by making other people laugh, or simply by smiling at them.

Making the smallest of gestures demonstrates that we have power; to uplift others, and ourselves.

Look into anyone's front yard and you'll see the drama of life unfolding in the world of plants and flowers and trees. Some of these survivors were given up for dead, yet another season or two rolled by and, and despite the fact that they were neglected, they sprang back to life.

The other night I watched the movie, “The World's Fastest Indian,” about an aging motorcycle enthusiast from New Zealand , who, during the 1960's had a dream of setting a world speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, in Utah .

So many things got in his way, including heart attacks and frequent, debilitating bouts of angina, and poor finances, seeming to conspire to prevent him from reaching his 25 year-long goal.

But he persisted, always keeping that big prize right in the forefront of his consciousness.

And he won, not once, but nine years in a row!

When you're feeling small, and when the world wants to diminish you, there's only one suitable response.

Dream bigger!
